PLATE TECH-TONICS

"Fakir" Akio Milan Paak

(Torema/Trm Jpn 010)

Osaka representative independent labal
Torema (not techno only) has already released 11 EPs. The latests are Akio Milan Paak's "Fakir"(Trm Jpn 010) & Tanaka Fumiya's "Jack Knife"(Trm Jpn 011). As we argued in other column, Akio breaks ready-made images + styles of 'techno' to reach unknown realm. The realm is in his (+ our) mind. Techno, noise, hiphop, Eno & soundtacks... This is selfish mixtures of them, hard, and unsuitable to dance, but exploration to subconsciousness.

"Look Back 1990-1993" B-2 Dep't

(Omni Data/OMNICD01)

We think that techno is happy. Cheerful. But, to maintain + continue this happiness, serious efforts was needed. B-2 Dep't (Kato Mickio + Nakamura Shigeru) had been keeping it. This is a compilation of their past works, from their own label,
Omni Data. We can recognize by it, that they had been supplying 100% pure happiness that is essentially be able to give once in a life. Nippon-jin often descrobe techno 'Piko-piko'. It has image that is childish but happy (= flower-tech). It might be what they had ever been doing. B-2 Dep't have turned their direction. They gave up familiar melodies, are making 'acid ambient flower-tech' now. In this direction, their brilliance will be heard soon.

"Romance" WEB

(Syzygy/SZY002LP)

Just next generation. Lyrical electro listening music by Sugimoto Takuya, a student of art college in Nagoya Nippon. Surely romantic, as remind us early F.U.S.E.(Richie Hawtin). And tonal edges protected it not fail to electro easy listening. Excellent.

"Spill-Over" Drawing Future Life

(Syzygy/SZY003LP)

Syzygy was found by Inaoka Ken (for DFL) in '93, it was the 1st independent techno label of Nippon. And Inaoka made the scene in Fukuoka (It is said that 'Fukuoka is hot + friendly' by all artists who visited there). This is DFL( Inaoka + Ni-Ya )'s long awaited 1st album. Side A is rhythmic + powerful, side B is lyrical(sometimes sounds like Eno), and what spills over from both of them is warmth.

"Big Tomorrow" Suzukiski

(His private label/DMCD-1027)

Suzukiski is Suzuki Takahiro who lives in Yokosuka city (known by U.S. navy's base). His 1st album "Thought"(DMCD-1016) was astounding. It was made by only poor synth + sampler, but has very refiened rhythms (Rhythm is a weak point of most Nippon artist, but he has prevailed it), and with minimum notes, it constructed itself 'music'. It told us 'Less is more'. He has real genious, and probably was taught music by the Lord of Techno, we thought.

This is his 2nd album from his private label, also only 500 copies. In comparison with the 1st that was made by his talent and was fluent, this seems that human hands crafted it. The 1st was godly, but "Big Tomorrow" is much humane.

And strange is, both of them are good if when it was played low. If play it loud, it is not interesting at all. His music must be the same as sounds of computer's fan, or buzz of motorcycle across the city of night. Someone (or no one) may be listening to them, and music of Suzukiski is in it. Listen hard, then it would be heard.

"Sinsekai" Tanzmusik

(Rising High/RSN CD26)

Announced before, but not released their 1st album, it has come at last. Tanzmuzik are Sawaki Okihide + Yamamoto Akio, and is the strongest unit in Kinki region (it includes Osaka). Combination of melodist Sawaki's romaticism + noise oriented Yamamoto's fierceness was ideal at their "Tan Tangue EP"(RSN 88). And here, it seems that Sawaki's taste is featured than ever. "Sinsekai" means 'new world', but it is also the name of Osaka's some downtown, the place that is forgotten by common people, and is where blue-collar workers + unemployees wander, enjoy, cry, buy something and sell himself, to survive. Tanzmuzik made poems from it. It is not adolescent music. Sleeve photo also remind us the small ironworks. And the music sounds like steel that rings in the town, and voices of the people living there, and their own dreams that each of them has... "Sinsekai" was produced by Tanzmuzik, it is surely theirs, but is 'voice of Osaka', real 'popular music' and ours. We are just proud of it.

"Decameron Densetsu"

(Hyper Rich/HRC-002)

The 2nd omnibus of this label that will be released '95/02/18 on vinyl. Their techno is rough, childish, anarchy & far from elegance of average Nippon techno. However, it is music that came directly from Tokyo street scene, so ours.

This LP is recommendable for only A1, MK2(Ooura Yuichi)'s beautiful 'ask me' That is filled with pathos, longing & love. And this LP contains songs of CuePlus (nice track, but their live PA is much better), Dentak, DAT Zoids, Telescorpion, Painter System, Natsuko Uppercrast, Medicine Case, Neuron & Chiba Rader.
